PDD-NOS School Strategies to Help

Remember that students with PDD-NOS need help and support in mainstream schools. The effects of PDD-NOS may be subtle but they are still far reaching. Here are a few tips:

Provide Visual & Written Supports

People with PDD-NOS often have problems understanding verbal instructions.

Using visual supports in the classroom can help tremendously.

Post a schedule for the day, write instructions on the board or on their paper.

Make sure to send home important announcements and written instructions for assignments.

Don't Ignore Bullying

Bullying and teasing when encountered must be addressed. Children with PDD-NOS may need, learning support in the classroom and social support outside of it.

Children with PDD-NOS are most vulnerable in the corridors, the cafeteria and the playground.

Encourage teachers to try and understand the world from the student with PDD-NOS’s point of view. Students with PDD-NOS are not trying to be disruptive, lazy, or disobedient.

Usually they exhibit problematic behavior when they are struggling to cope or don't understand a situation.
