What is a Token Economy?
A token economy is designed to increase desirable behavior and decrease undesirable behavior with the use of tokens. A person should receive a token immediately after displaying desirable behavior. The tokens are collected and later exchanged for a meaningful object or privilege.
Token economies gradually increase desirable behavior and decrease undesirable behavior. A token economy can be used at home or in a classroom to help manage aggressive or unpredictable behavior. However, token economies have also been used to teach new behaviors and social skills.
Token economies can be used individually or in groups.
Tokens should be portable and easy to dispense, Some common tokens are stickers, point tallies, or play money. Tokens are collected and later exchanged for meaningful objects, privileges or activities.
In order for a token economy to be effective clearly communicate what the person must do in order to receive tokens. Be specific about the desirable or undesirable behavior and the number of tokens awarded for correct behavior.
Make sure the reinforcers or awards for tokens are meaningful objects, privileges, or activities the individual values. Examples of possible reinforcers for your token economy include food, toys, video game time, free play, or special outings. Remember reinforcers that are highly desired by the individual will ensure success of your token economy. Also, be clear about how many tokens an individual must earn to get their reward.
Initially award tokens frequently, but as a person learns the desirable behavior, opportunities to earn tokens should decrease. The goal is to gradually fade the use of tokens so that the person eventually displays the desired behavior without any reward or incentive.
